Signing within the Framework of the Black Sea Submarine Cable Project
The Black Sea submarine cable project is moving to the next stage of implementation, which involves a survey of the Black Sea seabed.
The agreement, signed by Vano Zardiashvili, General Director of Georgian State Electrosystem, and Nicola Melchiotti, Chief Executive Officer of CESI, covers the procurement of consulting services for the design and supervision of the Black Sea seabed survey. Under the contract, consulting company CESI is responsible for preparing the scope of work and tender documentation required for geophysical and geotechnical surveys of the Black Sea, as well as assisting the Georgian side in conducting the tender. According to the document, CESI undertakes to assist the survey contractor in obtaining the necessary permits and to supervise all processes during the seabed survey.
Members of the Georgian State Electrosystem's Board of Directors, Sopio Kevlishvili and Zviad Gachechiladze, attended the signing.
Within the framework of the Black Sea submarine cable project, consulting company CESI has already conducted a feasibility study, which confirmed that the project is technically and economically viable. The results of the Black Sea seabed survey will make it possible to determine the best path for the practical implementation of the project.
The Black Sea underwater cable project envisages the construction of a high-voltage underwater transmission network to interconnect the electricity systems of Georgia and Europe.
The project is included in the Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) of the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) for 2022 and 2024, and has been submitted for inclusion in the ENTSO-E TYNDP 2026 plan. In 2025, the European Commission included the project on the list eligible for Projects of Mutual Interest (PMI) status.
